Sharon Heap

Lecturer

Sharon is a Registered Nurse (Adult) / Midwife with 31 years’ experience in the NHS. She has a diploma in Nursing and Midwifery and a BSc (Hons) degree in Midwifery. She has a mentorship and leadership qualification and has completed an introduction to teaching.

Prior to working at the University in 2022, Sharon led on maternity safeguarding for a local NHS Trust as Named Midwife safeguarding in a ‘Think Family’ corporate safeguarding team for 7 years, providing specialist advice, support and guidance in line with statutory safeguarding requirements, legislation and multi-agency procedures, devising and delivering safeguarding and domestic abuse training.

Whilst working in safeguarding, she gained recognition from the police crime commissioner/deputy chief mayor of Greater Manchester for her work within domestic abuse services, and the team won a Nursing times patient safety award. She also has national recognition from the perinatal institute in relation to implementing safeguarding recommendations into hand held maternity notes and is proud of a bespoke maternity pathway that she developed on the back of the findings of the NHSE hidden voices of maternity report (2015) and she showcased the pathway at a virtual midwifery conference.

She is currently working as a nurse/midwife lecturer in pre-registration nursing as she developed a passion for teaching and sharing knowledge whilst working in safeguarding as well as always being dedicated to helping and supporting others.

Sharon is also a co-module lead, personal and an academic tutor. She is looking forward to further study for the PCGE and onwards.
