Frances Oldroyd

Lecturer - Dental Technology

I first graduated from Leeds Dental Institute undertaking a BTEC Diploma in Centre of Dental Technologies and then Manchester Metropolitan University with a Distinction in Professional Studies in Advanced Removable Dentures.

I have worked between two large hospital trusts in the North East of England, predominantly in oncology dentures and have ten years' post-qualification. I produced a wide range of removable appliances but also undertook fixed. I have also been employed in a commercial laboratory so I understand the processes and workings of both large and small laboratories.

On employment within the ¸Û°Äͼ¿â, I undertook the PgCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Professional Education which lead to fellowship in the HEA.

I am the module lead for Basic Centre of Dental Technologies Techniques. This is the first-year module designed to equip students with a knowledge of how to make simple appliances and to develop manual dexterity. Removable Prosthetics is the second of the modules I lead and this gives students an in-depth knowledge on construction methods of more complex appliances but also provides instruction on the way appliances function.

I am also module lead for Specialised Removable Prosthetics in the final year. This has appliances that can be considered more complex but also takes aesthetics into considerations to give students a broader knowledge of construction techniques and to improve manual dexterity skills.
